What is the difference between an air cooled motorcycle and a liquid cooled one?
Answer:
All engines need to be cooled in order to stay within there optimum operating temperature. If the engine gets too hot for too long, serious damage can result.
An air cooled engine using "cooling fins" which create a larger surface area , and as wind passes through the cooling fins, heat is dissipated.
A liquid cooled engine uses liquid (water / antifreeze mix) that is circulated through the engine, in what are called water jackets. As the liquid flows through , it absorbs heat generated by the engine. The now hot liquid makes it to the radiator, where it the heat is dissipated through airflow.
Because a liquid cooled engine has more controlled temperature during operationg, the engines clearances can be much tighter - among other things, and liquid cooled engines typically produce more power / torque than a fan cooled engine of similar design.
