Power Tool Battery Usage Tips
If you are performing any type of property improvement, diy jobs or work professionally such as in a car repair unit, the chances are that you will be working with one or more hand held power device. These days most of the smaller power tools are cordless, relying on batteries, such as a Dewalt 18 volt battery, to give them power so it's very good to know a bit about these batteries and how to treat them so as to get the maximum life and performance out of them.
All technology is progressing at a very fast rate and technology for batteries is no different so these tips given here for getting the best out of your power tool batteries might be slightly different by next year so always check with your supplier when purchasing.
Tip 1 - Recharging time
Nowadays, the bulk of professional battery chargers for power tools such as the Dewalt Impact Driver will automatically stop charging when the battery is full but there are still some that keep charging even once the battery is full, triggering it to overheat which adds to battery degradation.
Tip 2 - To Empty Battery ...or Not To Empty?
Opinions differ about the correctness of waiting till a battery is completely emptied of power before re-charging. Some say you should or you are reducing the battery life and others say that batteries these days don't have 'memories' and it doesn't make any difference if you do. Most likely the best route to take is to charge a battery when you can feel the power tool you're using is not working so well. Best answer is to invest in a second battery so you can always have one charging. Even so, please note that battery cell damage can occur if you run it too low.
Tip 3 - Battery Harm
This tip may seem obvious but it's important to remember that batteries, any batteries, do not like to be dropped. So just be that bit more careful when using them.
3 Main Types of Batteries
There are three different types of batteries, as below:
First is the Nicad or Nickel Cadmium batteries which were the original type of battery. These are the most reliable and have the longest re-charge life - meaning they can be re-charged more times in their life than other batteries. An additional bonus is that they can operate in both very hot or very cold weather compared to other batteries. They are generally cheaper than other batteries. On the downside they are not so good for the environment when thrown away. Another negative is that nicads slowly give less power to the power tool as you work.
Next we have the Nickel-Metal Hydride battery or NiMH's These batteries hold a lot more power than the nicads and they also weigh quite a bit less. They have a couple of negatives for you to bear in mind in that they cannot be charged so many times as the nicads can and also they don't perform well in intense temperatures.
And then there are the Li-ion or Lithium Ion batteries. These batteries are superior in their power storage capabilities - hence their name 'Lion'. They hold their power longer and are able to give strong supply of power right through until they are empty. These batteries are able to maintain their energy well when stored away but you should be aware that if these batteries drop all of their charge below a certain level you will never be able to charge them again! Due to this characteristic when purchasing these batteries make sure you use a stockist who has a lively selling throughput so you get a good battery.
They are more expensive than the nicad batteries but are able to perform nicely even at freezing point though they would need to be previously warmed up in a normal temperature room in advance. They don't perform well at very high temperature. Due to their design all the battery cells charge up at an even rate reducing stress and helping longer lifespan. They are a little bit more prone to failure due to relying on a small inbuilt computer.
The above facts should have given you a good idea of the different batteries offered and their positives and negatives so that when buying a power tool battery you have a much better idea of how it will perform.
