Does a trouble code usually pop up with a bad speed sensor or speedometer?
I have a 1996 ford Windstar and the speedometer quit altogether. But I have continually checked for a code, but haven't got one. Could the sensor still be bad or is it just a bad speedometer? All else works on the instrument panel and it is analog.
Answer:
The problem is very likely in the speedometer. If the Vehicle Speed Sensor fails the system will produce the P0500 code (Vehicle Speed Sensor malfunction) and/or one of the related codes, P0501-0503. The transmission would also not go above first gear - it is electronically controlled and if it believes you are not moving it won't up-shift.
