The Honda Insight Vs The Toyota Prius
Honda has announced the price tag on the new Insight.Costing over $23,000; the new Prius is a couple of grand more than the new kid on the block; the Insight. The Insight is now the least expensive hybrid out on the market in the U.S.
The Insight offers an ECO Assist system which enhances fuel economy further by controlling acceleration rates and helping the driver drive learn how to drive more economically. The ECO socring helps the drive to have a system that allows for the best fuel economy, which is related back to the operator in the form of a miles per gallon readout. An electric motor gives the engine a nice boost, this system is called the integrated motor assist or IMA. This system in the next generation hybrids from Honda are greatly improved and result in reduced weight, cost savings, and greater cabin space. The Insight makes good use of Honda's Intelligent V-TEC engine technology. For about the price of a base mopdel Prius, you can get a nicely equipt Insight that comes with: rims, USB integraded stereo, navigaion with voice recognition, and steering wheel mounted shifter. The Insight and the Prius are clear competitors but Honda is determined to knock Toyota out of the competitive market to become the hybrid leader.
Opposite of the Insight, the 2010 Prius offers a 160-hp 1.8L engine and features three different driving modes. These 3 moeds include the power mode which of course adds more power, the EV mode which allows the Prius to run on electricity alone, and the ECO mode which nets the best fuel economy. The Prius also has a PCS, Pre- Collision System, available.Just set the PCS and the Prius will slow down by itself if the car ahead of you suddenly hits his brakes. The Prius also includes a new touch sensor system on the steering wheel to ensure safe driving.
When it comes to price the Insight is hands down the winner, but the gas mileage rating is another story altogether. The Honda has a reported 40-city mpg, 43-highway, and a combined mpg of 41; while the Prius has mpg of 48-city, 45-highway, and 46 of combined mpg.Traveling more than 20,000 miles in only 365 days (when gas is $2.50 a gallon), you would spend $1219 in fuel on the Insight and $1086 on the Prius. When you drive a Prius, the amount of gas saved compared to an Insight is about 53 gallons, so to cover the lower price you would have to drive for 27 years.Ok the Prius gets way better fuel economy, yet the Insight makes up the difference with its low starting price!
