Understanding What NPT Gages Are
Certain machines need to be measured in order to determine their pitch gage. In this instance, pitch is far from how people usually conceive the word to be. Speak to many people and the odds are that they will understand the word pitch only in the context of music. In the context of machines, pitch refers to the turns per inch (TPI) of different machine parts. There are different types of gauges that can be used to accomplish this. NPT pipe thread gages are used specifically to determine TPI. It can also be referred to as a screw pitch gage. Ring gages determine if the measurement of thread cut into the rings of rods or pipes are accurate.
Ring thread measurements are very important in the context of fluid conveyance. As there are a variety of fluids that need to be moved and transferred from one container to another, a mistake in measurement could lead to an accident. This is where the NPT gages come in. NPT stands for National Pipe Thread. Aside from NPT gages, there are also NPTF (National Pipe Thread Fuel) fittings that need to be considered. Whether the discussion revolves around NPT gages or the NPTF, the main concern is standardization. It is only making sure that there are standard measurements, and that these standard measurements are followed, that people can be sure that a tight seal can be created. NPT gages come in two types. These are the ring and the plug. The ring threads into a pipe whereas the plug will thread into a fitting. Regardless of the type, the purpose remains the same. They are there to determine accuracy of four full turns of the thread. Those that pass the tests will result to well-sealed joints if Teflon tape is used.
This is the use and purpose of the gage. In a nutshell, NPT gages are there to make sure that all pipe fittings meet standardization requirements. Meeting these requirements is key if fluid conveyance is to remain a safe process. Since some fluids are unsafe to humans, determining the compliance of plugs and rings could make the difference between the well-being of people and putting them at risk needlessly. Like with anything else, gages need to be maintained properly. Failure to do so could mean inaccurate measurements. There is the risk of giving the go signal on a pipe joint connection that is actually unsafe. Maintenance requires a few precautions. First of all, they need to be cleaned before they are used. In addition, it needs to be kept in mind that they are only to be used for measuring. Forcing them to fit into parts will damage them and render them unusable.
