What You Need To Do After Your Check Engine Light Comes On?
Whether your check engine light is yellow or red, solid or flashing, words or a graphic, the "check engine" light is a way your car can communicate with you. When this light is off, you don’t ever think about it. Your engine is warning you that something is wrong when the light is on. So what do you do when the check engine light is on?
What the light actually means
Luckily for you, a check engine light coming on doesn’t mean you need to get help right then usually. It does, however, mean that your engine needs attention as soon as possible. Depending on when your car was made, the check-engine light may flash or "strobe." If your light is strobing, then your engine problem is most likely serious and you should get to a mechanic as soon as possible. There are a couple things you can do to find out why your check engine light is on.
Read the error code for the check engine
Information about your engine is usually recorded in an internal computer in your engine. Many auto parts stores keep code reader computers on hand and available for free or inexpensive use. As soon as your light comes on, you should go to the store and ask to use their computer. On your dash, between the steering wheels and pedals, is usually where the plugin for the computer is found. Follow the instructions on the computer, and you will get an "error code" on the screen. This code should be written down.
The check engine light code and what it means
Often cryptic is the check engine light code the code reader computer gives you. You can check online as to what the code means. You make an educated decision about what to do when you know what the code means.
Do it yourself?
Go ahead and fix the engine problem yourself if you are comfortable with repair. Sometimes the problem could just be a loose cap. It also could be a major malfunction in your engine. Before doing it yourself, make sure you know how to repair. Fixing the problem can be simple if you have the tools, parts, and confidence.
Taking to car in for service
You should take your car in for service if the problem seems to be difficult. As almost every car-repair shop should have a code reading computer, you should let your mechanic know that the light is on. Ask for a detailed repair estimate before any work is done. As soon as you get your vehicle back, keep an eye on the performance for a few weeks to ensure the check engine light fix is actually working.
What if you ignore the check engine light?
It can be tempting to ignore the check engine light when it goes on. Be warned, though, that ignoring the light could be very dangerous. This might make your engine get severely damaged. Fuel efficiency could go down and your repairs later would be more expensive. In short, the check engine light is the first indication that something is wrong - so if you pay attention, you will save yourself time and heartache.
