STASHING YOUR STUFF - SOME HINTS TO EASE THE LOAD
There are some people who spend their lives collecting stuff, and there are others who live without. But even if you’re not the collecting kind, you’re probably still likely to need a storage facility sometime in your life.
Whether you’re moving house, moving offices, decluttering your living space, stashing your children’s memorabilia, putting extra furniture ‘on hold’ or perhaps you’re simply in between stages of your life…stashing your stuff in a self-storage unit is a practical and secure option.
It's a good idea to invest some time planning your move and storing your things in an organised, disciplined way - you'll be thankful you did. Here are a few hints to streamline the process and importantly, to help you find the proverbial needle in the haystack if you need to !
A FEW GENERAL TIPS
* Always use wrapping paper that isn't printed as newsprint can leave marks
• Take photographs of valuable items for insurance purposes
* Arrange copies of passports, visas, birth certificates etc and keep in a separate place
* When moving house, it's advisable to pack by room and to keep all the contents of that room as close as possible
• Have a designated ‘necessities’ box which can be unpacked first and which contains vital items such as adapter plugs, screwdriver, remote controls for TVs etc, a set of linen for each bed that will need to be made up on the first night, torch, candle
BOXES
* Boxes should be the same size and should not be too big, as they get too heavy and impossible to move
* Clearly label all boxes.Another way of doing it is to number the boxes and keep a detailed list of what's in them.Another packing idea from a storage company in Perth is to label the boxes for a particular room in a particular colour eg. red labels for dining room, green for kitchen etc.
* Add a couple of moth balls or something similar to each box to repel pests
* Boxes should be sealed with packing tape
* Ensure labels face outwards !
* Boxes and furniture should be placed on pallets rather than directly onto the concrete floor to prevent moisture absorption
OTHER ITEMS
• Books should be packed flat to prevent damaging their spines
* Avoid storing mirrors, paintings etc flat - they should be on their side to protect the glass
* Batteries should be removed from any items
* Prevent silver and brass from tarnishing by wrapping items in acid-free paper
To avoid rusting, wipe down all metal, cast iron or chrome surfaces (eg bicyles and lawn mowers) with a rag and a few drops of machine oil
* Machinery should be drained of petrol and any other flammable liquids, and gas bottled emptied
* Fridges and freezers should be cleaned out and completely dry before storing.Whilst in storage, the doors should be kept slightly open
• Clothing and curtains should be hung on hangers if possible
FURNITURE
* Store couches and mattresses on their sides
* Where possible, remove table legs and stack tables upside down.
• Securely tape keys to cupboards, draws etc. to the inside of the item
PACKING THE STORAGE UNIT
• Create a centre aisle for easy access
* Items that you may be likely to need should be stored at the front of the unit, easily accessible
* Store valuable items at the back
* Consider low-cost shelving to create more storage space which is easily accessible
* Put a dust cover made from cotton or a light plastic sheet over everything
