Does oxygen acetylene welding require a flux or an inert gas?
Answer:
No and no. The waste gases of combustion act as a semi-inert gas shield in OAW.
The waste gases are predominantly CO2 and H2O (water vapor) with small amounts of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons.
Flux isn't necessary, a layer of molten flux would actually insulate the steel and interfere with the heat input from the flame.
(Professional welders almost never use OAW anymore, but I've heard of welders taking arc welding rods, knocking the flux off with a hammer, and using the bare rod as fillers for either OAW or TIG welding.)
The water vapor in the combustion gases is actually a problem since it contaminates the weld. Water vapor reacts with iron at high temperatures forming iron oxides and hydrogen gas. Since it's a very small molecule, hydrogen can be easily dissolved in a lot of molten metals such as steel. However, when the weld puddle freezes the hydrogen is forced out of solution and forms lots of tiny gas bubbles in the solidified weld, known as "porosity." In other words, OAW unavoidably produces poor quality, weak welds, with a lot of surface oxides.
