Frequently Asked Questions...
spraying wash primer on cast aluminum with topcoat polyurathane paint. Tips please?
Hello,
I am being to spray on aluminum. I have a good amount of experience spraying. I have repainted quite a few cars but spraying acrylic enamel. Anyways, I have a hvlp devilbiss topcoat and a hvlp devilbiss primer gun. I was told all I need at the paint shop was the wash primer and the polyurathane paint. I have never sprayed polyurathane and I feel this is where I am struggling. I spray the wash primer, just a light coating (still transparent), and then wait approx. 15 min. for it to flash, then spray my topcoat. I seem to be having issues with orange peel, or the paint gathering in the curves of my aluminum. I am unsure if I am spraying my primer wrong, prepping wrong, or my topcoat wrong. For prepping I clean with thinner, then use a prep paint cleaner. The psi I am running is 20. Most aspects of my spraying and prep were given to me by the paint shop, any additional comments would help immensly. Thanks In Advance!
Answer:
You might try roughing up your surfaces with a 400 grit body paper, then after your first coat dries completely, go over it with fine grade steel wool before you shoot the poly. This gives both applications a surface to adhere to, and as long as you dont over spray, it shoud turn out perfect.
